Blog # 1 Jenn Doherty

My name is Jenn Doherty. I'm from Burlington, Ma, and am a marketing major, but I might end up switching to general business next year. My dream job is to open my own bakery some day. My Mom started her own business, a small toy store, so I have some knowledge of starting up a business. I would hope that if I ever was able to open a bakery, it would grow into a big company, possibly even a chain. There are so many chain restaurants and clothing stores, but not many chain bakeries.
When I read Americas Best Young Entrepreneurs, my favorite entrepreneurs were Lesley Silverthorn, and Brian Duggan, who developed Angaza Design. I find it interesting that they would want to develop a product that even people living in poverty could benefit from. New games and apps are always being introduced into the market, and I think it‘s awesome that people want to develop products that don’t revolve around the internet or gaming consoles. The article says “Lesley Silverthorn wanted to do more with her skills than “designing the next sexy consumer electronic for the U.S. market.”.” I picked these entrepreneurs for that reason, their product is beneficial, and from what I read, also affordable. I also found Course Hero, developed by Andrew Grauer, to be interesting because it’s a good idea that probably helps a lot of college students get tips from other students, and allows them to share lectures and ideas easily. At the same time, I could see how that could potentially lead to copyright and plagiarism issues.
A majority of the entrepreneurs featured in the article created online sites for tutoring, and clothing related products, so not much else besides Angaza Design really caught my attention. I searched to learn more about Angaza Design and what the company is all about, and found a video that showed their solar light product being put into someones home. This is the site i was on, Angaza Design . I found the video below on the site, and thought it was really cool.

When I read through Inc’s Top Young Entrepreneurs, 30 under 30; someone that stood out was Jordan Goldman. Goldman developed Unigo, which is a site that allows college students to write school reviews, making it easier for students that are researching colleges. This is a good idea because there are so many different books and sites where you can review colleges, but most are based on school statistics, size, location, and overall rank. Myself  having been in the college search last year, I found that it was more helpful to read actual college student reviews and thoughts on a school, instead of just the overall statistics of it.

  1. Hey Jenn! I really like your idea to start a bakery and how you have plans to expand the business to a larger company. The American Entrepreneurs that you chose were also very unique I found their product really interesting and feel you did a good job not only explaining it but by adding the video gave it that extra touch. I also liked how the product could benefit just about everyone and wasn’t targeting a specific category such as electronics. While reading, I also enjoyed Jordan Goldman’s idea to create Unigo. That website would be very useful when high school students or even transfers were looking into different colleges. With us being freshman and all, I wish that I would have had the insight when trying to decide a school. I feel as though it would have made it a lot easier for me to make a decision. Overall I enjoyed your blog and learned a lot from it.
