Amanda's Blog #1

My name is Amanda-Lee Healy and I'm from Northbridge, MA. I graduated from Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational High School with a focus in business technology. While in school I enjoyed being involved in many clubs and community service activities. Coming to Nichols, I know that I want to study something involving business, though I wasn't exactly sure what major would be best so I'm currently labeled undecided. While doing some research, I have realized that I may enjoy studying business finance. With that said, currently my dream job would be to work in the financial department at the Boston Children’s Hospital. I have always wanted to help others and if I worked for a company that did that it would be the ultimate goal. Also I would love it if my career position allowed me the opportunity to travel to different locations. I love the city atmosphere and would enjoy pursuing a career that embodied that while bettering life for others indirectly.

When researching about young American entrepreneurs, I found many interesting products and services though one that stood out to me was Funk-tional Enterprises. This business was created by two New York City finance students, Katie Shea and Susie Levitt who are both 24 years old. This really caught my eye because they share the same major that I am considering. The business they have created selling portable shoes that you can fold up and store in your purse. When realizing this I was instantly hooked on their product I love shoes and feel that the idea of having flats that will fit in your purse for after a long day in heels is a great idea. This product makes life more comfortable for women who have to walk longer distances after work in heels. When doing further research on the success of the business I discovered that they have made $1 million dollars in revenue during the year 2010. Learning this is motivational to me because I am pursuing the same major and they are using their product to make life better for others.

  1. Hey Amanda, I thought your blog was really interesting when I read it. I chose to reply to yours because I thought that CitySlips were a unique and cool invention, and thought you explained them well. Shea and Levitt's idea was so simple, but also helpful to women who wear heals. The product isn't just limited to heels though, anyone who has uncomfortable shoes on could use CitySlips. When I read the article I thought it was clever and handy that they tiny pouch the shoes are in turn into a bag to carry high heels.
I also liked how you mentioned that you were motivated by them and their product because you are going to be studying the same major that they are. I think it’s cool that you want to work at Boston’s Children’s Hospital, especially that you know you want to be in the financial department. You also mentioned how you want to travel, I hope you're able to do that in the future!
