Hey Marc, I really enjoyed watching your PowerPoint presentation! It is cool that your roommate offered you his help by directing you to his brother for an interview. The picture on your 3rd slide, was it done by his company? Because it looks so nice! I like all the stones. I think it is awesome that he already has loyal customers seeing as he has only been in business for 3 years. I saw you said that having good connections was a helping factor and I totally agree. If you have good connections with a lot of people, you most defiantly have a great chance of having your business be successful. His goals for the future are good too. It seems that they have a good business going on for them and it will keep getting better and better. They more work they do, and they better the work, the more happy customers will be and spread the word.
I really like this business. It is a really good idea to have good customer service. If a customer has a problem with what they did, they will fix it with no cost. This helps spread the word about the business and customers will tell others how good the owners are about being serious and helpful. Obviously it is hard to start up a business, but it seems like the company is rather successful, which is great. I have worked in the landscaping and construction business being paid under the table by my neighbor. This area of work can be fun and interesting, which I feel is important to have a successful business. If you like what you do for a job, then you will care about it and put a lot of work into it.
Hey Marc, I really like how this company took out a bank loan to spark it because it is the exact structure that most successful companies start off with. They must take out a loan in order to obtain a certain level of equipment to make the business possible to pay back the loan. I actually do landscaping a ton for people over the summer. I used to work at a golf course in my town, and I would do maintenance, doing landscaping from 4am-4pm. I agree with Jesse in the sense that it is cool how the company has obtain such a good quality rep. This can serve as a free way of advertisement because people hear about how good the company was, and they can get more business this way. Furthermore, it was smart for them to do something they both loved because they will stay in business longer if it is something that they love. Good job man.
Hey Marc, this business is great. It is really cool that your roommate helped you out by contacting his brother and having the time for you to interview him. I really like how the company took our bank loans to spark the business because that is how most small businesses start and his business is striving. And the great thing about this business is the how they treat their customers. One of the biggest things for them is the customer service. Having customer service really helps their reputation and will help them in the future with big jobs and for new customers. Also the fact that they have a lot of loyal customers even though they have only been in business for 3 years is a great sign. Also it shows that their quality of work is high and that they really care about what they are doing and how their work looks. The more work they do, and the better the work, the more happy customers will be and spread the word .Furthermore, it was smart for them to do something they both love because it will make it easier for them to stay in business through good times and the bad because they are doing something that they love and enjoy doing.
There seem to be a lot of landscapping companies around these days but not many people can afford to have their land professionally taken care of. I know some different people who have worked for and owned landscapping companies and a little more than half are now unemployed. It is good that your friend did not go under like the majority of the other companies had during this economic struggle. With the market being so great they have to be good at what they do or else they would no longer be around. I am assuming that they realize this and are just acceptable with the un-known facts about how their business will survive even with the loyal customers. I guess that is just part of being an entrepreneur. “More often than others, entrepreneurs see the world in shades of gray, rather than simply black and white. They tend to embrace uncertainty in the business environment, turning it to their advantage rather than shying away.” (Kelly/McGowen 104) I learned that even when you are in a big market like the one of landscapping it is possible to be above your competitors. You have to work harder, maybe harder then most in your market, but at the end you will be the one with the loyal customers who will in deed keep you alive in the cutthroat environment.
I thought this was a great slideshow. I'm glad that you talked about the competition this business faces because small trade businesses like that are seasonal, and knwoing your competition is crucial to make the most of a season. Also, determining the prices to set is important because it is the most influential factor when determining what business to use.
Hey Marc! I was very interested in your presentation because I too used to and still do occasionally work in the landscaping business with my Uncle during to summer which is why your presentation stuck out at me. That's awesome that his friend has landscaping degrees. It shows that he took the time to because qualified instead of just jumping right into and that's what customers like to see. Getting in to the landscaping business is extremely tough. I know a lot of people who have started their own landscaping company and are unfortunately out of business within the next couple of months so I applaud your friends business for making it three years and I hope there are many more to come for his business. I thought it was great that if a customer has a complaint with something you did, that you will fix it no charge. That's how you build strong relationships with your customers and that's how you stay in business. That's great that you got a loan from a bank to start your business. Banks can be very tough to get loans from, especially when it comes to landscaping, which supports, "Getting commercial loans for a new venture can be tough. Banks and other lenders are understandably hesitant to fund a business that doesn't have a track record (Kelly/McGowen 2012)." I learned that having customer loyalty is key to being successful and that if you have a dream, go for it.
