  1. Hey Seth. It is impressive that your father has owned and run his own painting business for over 25 years. You mentioned that he has always loved painting and that he is very good at it, which is a key factor in owning your own business. It is cool that he started out small, but grew so much that he was able to paint Jim Calhoun’s beach house. I know a lot of painting companies that start out small and stay pretty small or local. You said that he started the business himself, but does he do every job himself, or does he have any employees? It is good that he was able to make so many connections and gain so many customers. It sounds like he had to do a lot of research and hard work, like learning how to prep a house before painting it. The fact that he does most of it alone, and yet has been in business for 25 years means that he must be very good at what he does. A lot of people would not be able to accomplish what he did. You mentioned that strong dedication is important when creating a business and getting it to grow, which I agree completely with. Your fathers business sounds very successful and they way you describe him and all he has achieved is inspiring.

  2. Hey Seth! After going through your slide show presentation on your father and his business, Precision Painting, I was able to learn many things and found it very interesting. I think the part that I found most interesting was that he painted the famous basketball coach Jim Calhoun's beach house down in Madison, Connecticut. I can't even fathom the reputation he must have and the customer relationships he has obtained over the years he has been in business. That definitely supports the statement, “satisfied customers can become advocates for a business, spreading the word with more speed and credibility than even the best promotional campaign,” (Kelly/McGowen & Kelly/McGowen, 2012). Another part I found interesting is the height of certain peaks and other objects. I never really thought of how high some parts of a house or building could be. Being deathly afraid of heights my self, I know I could never do your father's job, and for that I respect him that much more. From your presentation, I learned that you should have passion for what you do, and you should look at your job as a fun task every day rather than a job you are reluctant going to.

  3. Hi Seth, I found your powerpoint very interesting because my brother also owns his own painting company. I know how hard it can be to find jobs and keep up with the economy. I like how your dad took one of his childhood likes and pursued it. He knew that was something he loved to do and now he is a successful business owner. Another thing i noticed was the weather factor. That is something my brother talks about all the time. It makes it hard to make an income when the weather will stay bad for weeks. I give your dad alot of credit for starting this type of business, anyone who starts a business that has a lot of everyday risk factors should be given a lot of credit.

    1. I think it is great that your Dad has a job that he truly loves. It was a smart idea to make it a sole proprietorship. That way, your Dad doesn't have to worry about paying other employees. He can also make sure he is satisfied with the job he does, and to make sure it satisfies the customer's needs. It is a huge accomplishment that the business has been running successfully for 25 years. It's great that he has developed loyal customers through being friendly and consistent with his good work. Personally, I would rather hire a private painter that works on his own to ensure that he is doing a good job. I find it crazy that your Dad had to paint a house with a 100 foot peak. That must have been scary as hell and I know I wouldn't be able to do that. I hope that your Dad's business stays successful and is in business in the future.

  4. Hey Seth, I found your fathers business very interesting. It is impressive that your father owns and run a painting business for the last 25 years. It is great that he loves painting and is very good at it, which is a key factor in owning your own business. It’s great that he started his business out small and it grew over time. And the fact that he painter Jim Calhoun’s beach house is amazing. There are a lot of small painting companies that start off small and are unable to grow to the size that your fathers company has. And it’s always a great thing when you can make connections in the business and to have a large amount of loyal customers. When you make connections, it gives you the opportunity to exceed in your business and to get a good reputation with other business. And at the level that his business is at, it probably requires a lot of research like the types of paint needed for each type of wall or the quality of a paint brush and how it paints. It is extremely hard to do what your father has done and for him to do it by himself is amazing.

  5. Hey Seth, I found your presentation interesting and also knowing that your dad has his own business. He seems to be very successfull seeing that he has been in business for over 25 years. That's awesome that your dad has a business that he truly enjoys and also that he doesn't have to worry about employees and paying them. He can complete that job the way he wants to and be satisfied with his work. It is a big accomplishment for your dad from starting small and later be working on Jim Calhoan's beach house. He must have gotten a big reputation and alot of respect after that. I give him alot of credit for what he has accomplished.

  6. hey seth! It was so interesting to watch your presentation. I think that it is so cool that your dad owns his own company by himself. It must be awesome for him to do something that he loves so much. That is so cool that he got to paint Jim Calhoun's beach house. I can tell that he overcame so many challenges in order to get to where he is today. I think it is so good that he is able to keep his competitive advantage even though he is the only one working there. I think it is good that he wants to keep the business in the family and maybe one of your siblings could work hard to take it over in the future if they wanted to. I think he really deserves all of the success that he has earned due to all of his hard work.

  7. dude whats up? man i thought it was mad chill how your dad has owned his business for so long. its also really cool how your dad did what he has done and loved to do for so long since he painted with his dad when he was a little kid. its also really cool how he painted jim calhouns house it must be huge. its cool how he does it all by himself because he does a better job even tho it takes longer and he doesn't get paid as much.i liked his marketing strategy. you shouldn't let the business die you should take it over and make it huge like make it grow and branch out and become a millionaire.
