Hey Jenn, I really liked your PowerPoint presentation. I found the challenge of getting loans informative for those who are looking to start up their own business in the future. In the book it states, “Banks and other lenders are understandably hesitant to fund a business that doesn’t have a track record” (Kelly/McGowen, 2012).When talking about successes, I never realized that there are toys only sold to small toy shops which I find interesting. Also, when reading further about completion, I like how the business owner provides custom services such as gift wrapping and personalized services. Advertising by word of mouth is important and I think in businesses like this it could really help, especially when it comes to holiday shopping. I find it unfortunate that the business is going to be closing, but I enjoy how the owner sees it as a positive rather than negative. This business owner seems very ambitious, which is a great quality to have when entering a new chapter of life. Jenn, I feel as though the questions you asked were good and can really help provide future business owners more insight on what owning a business is like. Business plans are definitely an important aspect of having a successful business, no matter the size. Overall, I really enjoyed your presentation and learned a lot about Groton Toy Shoppe.
Hi Jenn, I really enjoyed reading about your mothers toy store. I like how she saw that the area needed a toy store and took the inititive to open one. One thing that interested me was her passion for the business, its cool that even though she is not brining in a salary she continues to keep the business up and going, that shows the determination that a small business owner should have. I also find it very cool that she is drawing people in by offering different toy lines that someone like a Toys R Us would not carry. Thats shows smart business techniques. Its too bad that she is giving up the toy store when the lease runs out, but sometimes that happenes in business. The fact that she is continuing to open another small business shows that she has the determination to keep trying until she successeds.
Hey Jenn, I loved reading about your mother's store. I love the fact that she opened the toy store because there was not a toy store anywhere near you guys and people did not want to drive 20 miles to get toys. One of the challenges I thought was very interesting because I did not know that you need the money in the first year or two to get inventory and start up your own business. The tough thing about most businesses is with the technology these days everyone orders things online because it’s so much easier. So it is very difficult to have a business when people never want to leave their house. I love how your mom donates toys to fundraisers because it shows how she loves to give to people and wants people to be happy. It is very true that you need to love your job and the products you sell because if you are miserable no one will want to come and purchase the toys. That’s sad that when your mom’s lease is up she’s she will be closing her business because when you love something it will be hard to leave it but I bet she will have some wonderful memories in The Groton Toy Shoppe!
Hey Jenn, your Mom sounds like a true entrepreneur. She "used personal money" to finance the business, and this is exactly what an entrepreneur has to accept. They accept that sense of taking a risk, and it is not always guaranteed that it will work out in the end. However, it sounds like your Mom is doing a good job with her business. It has grown, and even though it isn't drawing a full income rate that she was hoping for at this point, the business has still grown, and it can keep growing for the future. I also liked how in the specific question slides, she says that if you're going to start a business that you need to plan around two years down the line. If you start a business with an idea that you can only see for a few months, then it probably isn't the best idea. Your Mom did her research, has a business management degree, and her company sounds so cool. I would love to work in a toy store, but I don't think it would be "work". I'm a child at heart, and I still play with tons of toys. Anyways, awesome job Jenn - this was a great presentation.
Hey Jenn, it is extremely cool that your mother opened her own toy store in an area that needed one. Also the challenge of getting loans very informing and a key factor for someone who wants to start their own business. And the fact that she used her own personal money to finance her business, and that is very important for an entrepreneur to accept. Also that she is not bringing in a salary she her determination she has. That is why she is so successful in being a small business owner. That when they want to start a business, they take the risk of using all their personal money and the risk that they can’t get loans. “Banks and other lenders are understandably hesitant to fund a business that doesn’t have a track record” (Kelly/McGowen, 2012). It is also cool that she is bringing in customers by offering different toy lines that the big box stores like Toys R Us do not carry. That is a very smart business technique that will bring her success in the future. And the fact that she donates toys to different fundraisers which shows she enjoys her job and really does care about the children.
Hey Jenn. It seems that your mom is a real deal entrepreneur. She saw a problem, jumped on it and took a risk. She used her own personal money to finance the business and turned out successfull. It's awesome that she is able to go to work and enjoy it everyday. I found your presentation interesting to read and seems that your mom is doing good. I give her credit for what she accomplished.
